Miles Coolidge

Upon completing his Master of Fine Arts degree at the California institute of the Arts, Coolidge received a postgraduate DAAD fellowship for one year of study with Bernd Becher at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. His work has since been involved with reconciling a concern with the formal properties of photographs (scale, materiality, presentation) with the character of subjects that comprise the physical and conceptual armature that make such pictorial representations meaningful. He has taught photography and studio art at Otis College of Art, UCLA, USC, and the California Institute of the Arts. Coolidge's artwork includes seven photographic series'; Coal Seam Bergwerk Prosper-Haniel, Garage Pictures, Safetyville, Central Valley, Mattawa, Drawbridges and Street Furniture, and the photographic installations Observatory Circle, Accident Investigation Site, and Wall of Death.

His most recent solo exhibition, at Peter Blum Gallery in New York featured images of a coal seam in the last remaining operational coal mine in Germany. Among the group exhibitions he has participated in are Der Rote Bulli, NRW-Forum, Düsseldorf, Germany, Elsewhere, Carnegie Museum of Art; Stills, Walker Art Center, Minneapolis; Defamiliar, Regen Projects, Los Angeles; Sightings, Institute for Contemporary Art, London; The Campaign Against Living Miserably, Royal College of Art, London; L.A. or Lilliput, Long Beach Museum of Art; Tomorrow Forever-Photography as Ruin, Kunsthalle Krems, Austria; Made in California 1900-2000, Los Angeles County Museum of Art; Flight Patterns, Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles; New Settlements, Nikolaj Contemporary Art Center, Copenhagen, Denmark; Trade, Fotomuseum Winterthur, Switzerland; First the Artist Defines Meaning, Kunsthalle Graz, Austria; and Eloi: Stumbling Towards Paradise, California Museum of Photography, Riverside. His work is in a number of institutional collections, including the Metropolitan Museum of Art, New York, NY, the Albright-Knox Museum, Buffalo, NY, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art, the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum, New York, NY, the Baltimore Museum of Art, the Orange County Museum of Art, Newport Beach, California, the Lannan Foundation, Santa Fe, New Mexico, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Edwin A. Ulrich Museum of Art, Wichita State University, Wichita, KS, the Museum of Contemporary Art, Los Angeles, the Henry Art Gallery, Seattle, WA and the Art Gallery of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia.

Critical surveys of his work can be found in X-TRA Fall 2014 ("Angel of History, or Canary in the Coal mine?", by Jan Tumlir), Camera Austria 76, 2001 ("Miles Coolidge," by Nadja Rottner) and Frieze, January/February 1999 ("Nowheresville," by Helen Molesworth).
