About the Artists

Cauleen Smith is an interdisciplinary artist whose work reflects upon the everyday possibilities of the imagination. Smith was raised in Sacramento, California and lives in Los Angeles. Smith is currently Art Program faculty at the California Institute of the Arts.

Romi Crawford, Ph.D., is Chair and Professor of Visual and Critical Studies at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago. She regularly writes on contemporary art and is co-author of The Wall of Respect: Public Art and Black Liberation in 1960s Chicago and editor of Fleeting Monuments for the Wall of Respect. In 2021 she initiated the Blacks Art Movement School Modality.

Arthur Jafa is an artist, filmmaker and cinematographer. Across three decades, Jafa has developed a dynamic practice comprising films, artefacts and happenings that reference and question the universal and specific articulations of Black being. Underscoring the many facets of Jafa’s practice is a recurring question: how can visual media, such as objects, static and moving images, transmit the equivalent “power, beauty and alienation” embedded within forms of Black music in US culture?

Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa is an artist, an arts writer, and Graduate Program Director of the photography MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. His work is on view in the exhibition Greater New York 2021, MoMA PS1, and his most recent book, Dark Mirrors, was released by MACK in Winter 2021.

VALS is presented with generous support from The Claire Trevor Society and CTSA Dean's Fund for Excellence.
