GRADUATE ALUMNA FLORA KAO AT PASADENA MUSEUM OF CALIFORNIA ART

Thursday, January 9, 2014 - 10:01
FLORA KAO: HOMESTEAD
Pasadena Museum of California Art
Opening Reception: Saturday, January 18, 2014 | 7 PM - 9 PM
Exhibition Dates: January 19, 2014 – April 20, 2014

Focusing on a prefabricated cabin that stands on the verge of collapse in Wonder Valley, artist Flora Kao (MFA 2012) explores human relationship to environment. Through life-size rubbings of each side of the abandoned homestead's four walls, Kao captures the shack at a specific moment in its decay. Suspended in the PMCA's Project Room, the canvas rubbings envelop the viewer in gestural black marks that echo the original structure's form and texture. Mapping absence and presence, the installation offers a visceral encounter with erasure and accumulation. The project highlights the poignant histories of the deserted shacks that dot the Mojave Desert, remnants of America's most recent wave of manifest destiny.

Flora Kao: Homestead is organized by the Pasadena Museum of California Art. Kao is a recipient of an ARC grant from the Center for Cultural Innovation.
