Edward Patrick Alva Returning to Sundance as Assistant Editor

Edward Patrick Alva returns to Sundance as the assistant editor on the film "The Hunting Ground" by Kirby Dick.

From the Makers of "the Invisible War" comes a startling exposé of rape crimes on U.S. campuses. Weaving together first-person testimonies, the film follows survivors as they pursue their education and justice - despite harsh retaliation, harassment, and pushback.

Jesse Colin Jackson Named Hellman Fellow

Jesse Colin Jackson was named a Hellman Fellow for 2014.  Professor Jackson is one of more than 1,200 Hellman Fellows who over the last 20 years have gone on to become chairs and heads of departments, MacArthur Geniuses and faculty members with distinguished research track records.

The Hellman Fellows Program is unique in its flexibility and reach to faculty from a broad range of disciplines, supporting research in the arts, humanities, sciences, engineering, business, medicine and law.

In 1995, the founders Chris and Warren Hellman began making grants to colleges and universities in support of junior faculty research.  The Hellman Fellows Program has grown to support over 100 assistant professors annually at fourteen institutions. Over 1,000 of the Hellman Fellows are from campuses of the University of California System.

GRADUATE ALUMNA STACY KRANITZ, IN THAMES AND HUDSON MONOGRAPH

Stacy Kranitz (MFA 2014) in
Photographer's Sketchbooks
by Stephen McLaren, Bryan Formhals

Photographers Sketchbooks, published this month by Thames and Hudson, features 49 international photographers contributing rare looks at the evolution of their projects. The term “sketchbook” is used here as a broad embrace of any piece of the preparatory process: contact sheets, book proposals, film negatives, zines, pinned prints, and scrawled text — all are assembled in a compendium that goes behind the scenes of professional photography.

Kentucky-born Stacy Kranitz is as much a historian as an artist; for her series on Appalachia she spent years photographing people in the often stereotyped region, as well as collecting text from a local newspaper and other artifacts of the place, making her studio into her own “museum and archive."
