The Department of Art is heading into a new and exciting future, and we want you to be a part of it by becoming a Friend of Art.  Your support will sustain our mission of providing quality education for our undergraduate and graduate students, expand outreach to our local community, and add to the number of projects and opportunities that make our department one of the premier programs in the nation.

As a Friend of Art, your contribution will support one or more of the following:

  • Visiting Artists and Scholars Program, in which distinguished artists, scholars, curators, critics, and gallerists are invited to give public lectures and conduct studio visits with students;
  • Student exhibitions held throughout the year, including the MFA Thesis exhibitions and the Undergraduate Honors Exhibitions;
  • Summer outreach program to public school students;
  • Graduate Student Fellowships;

Joseph S. Lewis III

Joseph S. Lewis III, a nationally known artist, arts administrator, educator, and author is a Professor in the Department of Art and was the Dean of the Claire Trevor School of the Arts from 2010 to 2014.

He came to the University of California, Irvine from the School of Art and Design at Alfred University, New York, where he was Dean and a tenured professor of art for more than five years.

Prior to Alfred, Mr. Lewis was Dean of the School of Art and Design at the Fashion Institute of Technology in New York City for three years.  Before that he was Chair of the art department at California State University at Northridge for six years, and was a tenured professor, teaching visual arts.  From 1991 to 1995, Mr. Lewis was on the faculty of California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) while also administering a public art program for the City of Los Angeles.  Other teaching experiences include

MFA BENEFIT RAFFLE FOR CHIASMUS: ZONES OF POLITICAL AND AESTHETIC IMAGINATION

To raise additional funds for the upcoming MFA curated show Chiasmus: Zones of Political and Aesthetic Imagination (January 12 - February 11, 2012), graduate students are conducting a benefit raffle of their own artwork.  All funds raised will support the catalog and installation of the show. 

Raffle tickets are $5 each.  The raffle will take place on January 5, 2012, and winners will be notified via email.
