Lowery Stokes Sims is a Distinguished Professor in the Department of Art at UC Irvine.  She is also Acting Chief Curator at the Museum of Arts and Design where she has been on staff since 2007.  In 2000 she left the employ of The Metropolitan Museum of Art where she had been an educator and curator to be director and eventual president of the Studio Museum in Harlem.  A specialist in modern and contemporary art she is known for her particular expertise in the work of African, Latino, Native and Asian American artists.  She has published extensively and her research on the work of the Afro-Cuban Chinese Surrealist artist Wifredo Lam was published by the University of Texas Press in 2002.  Sims has lectured nationally and internationally

Corporeal Impulse is a group exhibition featuring five West Coast artists who work primarily in clay including Julia Haft-Candell, Matt Merkel Hess, Jeffry Mitchell, Kathleen Ryan and Bari Ziperstein. The exhibition focuses on the implications between clay and the body as both a cognitive and intuitive process. As a physically involved medium, clay is capable of recording the artist’s presence and affecting the viewer through its materiality, its handmade nature creating an empathetic appeal. The works explore ceramics sculpturally, challenging the inherent limitations of clay whilst critically engaging with its decorative history. Arena 1 Gallery is pleased to present GHOSTS - a group exhibition, curated by Michael EB Detto and Sayon Syprasoeuth, which gathers new work from six artists exploring the aftermath of the catastrophe, the genocide, or the war.  How should we treat the Ghosts each of these leaves behind – in real life, as metaphor, as a tool?
