Ceramics - Middle School

Create objects of wonder!  Hand mold your unique creations using sculpture materials and techniques.

Students will experiment with different sculpture materials and methods to hand-make one-of-a-kind sculpture projects.  The Academy will end in a final exhibition for family and friends (more details to be shared).  Supplies included with registration cost.

Digital Filmmaking

Ages 14-19

 

Lights, camera, action!  Work on set of your own short film with hands-on training in directing, creative storytelling, and equipment usage.  

Students will practice team work and collaboration by working in small groups to create, develop, shoot and edit their own short films.  In partnership with the UCI DigiFilm program, students will have access to professional grade equipment and computer software, and learn the ins and outs of the professional video production world.  The Academy will end in a final screening of all the student films (more details to be shared).  Supplies included in registration cost.

Drawing/Painting - Middle School

Take your skills to the next level!  Learn advanced studio technique and complete portfolio-ready artwork.  

Through various exercises and training methods, students will undergo group and individual instruction geared to develop the basic skills and techniques needed as they begin their drawing and painting journeys.  The day will be split between drawing and painting in order to maximize students' engagement.  The Academy will end with a final exhibition for family and friends (more details to be shared).  Supplies included in registration cost.

Animation

Ages 10-13

 

Bring imagination to life!  Plan, illustrate, edit and score your very own animated films.

Students will learn a variety of hands-on illustration and producton techniques to create, model and animate their very own cartoons and imagery.  Lessons include the fundamentals of stop motion and 2-D hand drawn animation.  The Academy will end in a final presentation for family and friends (more details to be shared).  Supplies included with registration cost.

Digital and Darkroom Photography
 

July 30-August 10

Ages 14-19

 

From digital to black and white!  Develop a holistic approach to producing stunning photos both on the computer and in the darkroom.  

Students will split their time learning the fundamental and advanced techniques of darkroom and digital photography.  Lessons in darkroom photography consist of elements of a good black and white photograph, metering/exposure of a 35mm film camera, and developing your own film and prints.  Lessons in digital photography consist of manipulation of DSLR camera settings, editing on Adobe software, and image processing.  The Academy will end in a final exhibition for family and friends (more details to be shared).

With a mixture of group and individual instruction, students will push the boundaries on their skills and knowledge, while fine-tuning and finessing their acquired skills for further development.  Supplies are included in the registration cost.  The Academy will end in a final exhibition for family and friends (more details to be shared).

This Academy course is for advanced artists, and while students may self-select their level, we do recommend you have experience in both drawing and painting.  If interested, we do also offer a Drawing/Painting - Beginner course.

First Glimpse: Introducing The Buck Collection

at the Institute and Museum for California Art

Art patrons and art lovers know the collection as “the best collection of California art that no one has ever seen.”

For more than twenty years, Newport Beach developer Gerald Buck engaged in an unexpected pastime: building an unparalleled collection of artworks in a wide variety of genres and media.

Initially collecting for pleasure, eventually Mr. Buck realized that he had in fact built something unique: more than thirty-two hundred works, most of which were bought, boxed, and stored away. Many of the works in the collection have not been seen since they were purchased and stored, though Mr. Buck lent works to exhibitions across Southern California. Experimental Media Performance Lab (xMPL)

An evening of performance and films celebrating the life and work of dancer/artist Simone Forti, who has had a deep impact on avant-garde art and performance for six decades, inspiring countless artists, musicians, and dancers. Forti will perform one of her signature works, New Animations, followed by a discussion with Professors Carol Burke (English) and Simon Leuong (Art).
