The Department of Art at the University of California, Irvine is pleased
to present the thesis exhibitions by the 2014 Master of Fine Art
candidates. This represents the culmination of three years of rigorous
formal and theoretical study. The twelve candidates will present new work
in the areas of photography, painting, sculpture, performance, video and
installation.

In the Room Gallery Stacy Kranitz presents As it was Give(n) to Me, an
archive of collected images text, drawings and objects that traces
colonial exploration and extraction in central Appalachia. These documents
reflect on our relationship to representations of reality and the inherent
flaws and ruptures in constructed notions of truth.

In the UAG Gallery Shaun Black debuts photographs and videos that explore
the pragmatic decisions made in the production of catalog and educative
imagery. Highlighting pictorial elements originally introduced to orient
or educate the viewer, the work introduces possible alternate cultural or
political connotations.

In the front gallery of the CAC Daniel Ingroff will show a series of
paintings paired with drawings. The drawings are renderings derived from
images of 19th century bank locks and the paintings are abstractions that
obfuscate the way that they were made. Like a puzzle, these images
meditate on the art object as a conversation between maker and viewer.

In the back gallery of the CAC Sean Cassidy will be presenting metabolized
forms from our built environment. The work is a negotiation between the
liminal and concrete, hot tub and pergola, vessel and portal.
